King Charles has announced his decision to disclose his complete personal tax statements as part of an initiative to enhance transparency regarding royal finances. The King will make public his annual tax payment details today, becoming the first monarch to do so.
A source from the palace indicated that it is King Charles’ explicit desire to share his tax information with the public for the first time, given the increased scrutiny surrounding the Firm’s finances. The disclosure will encompass the total tax amount paid by the King, including income from personal wealth, investments, and specific Capital Gains tax.
In response to inquiries about the expansion of the palace’s financial briefings, a Palace aide, as reported by the Telegraph, stated that the King believed it was the appropriate course of action. The aide expressed the King’s hope that this move would significantly contribute to public comprehension of the Sovereign Grant, Duchy of Lancaster, the monarch’s estate, and private income sources.
Private funds consist of earnings from investments or trading profits, revenues generated from personal estates such as Balmoral and Sandringham, and personal savings. The Duchy of Lancaster estate, comprising land, investments, and various properties, provides the King with an annual income, standing at £26.8 million in 2024/2025. King Charles voluntarily pays the highest UK income tax rate of 45% on earnings from the Duchy of Lancaster.
The Duchy was established to offer the reigning monarch an autonomous income source, historically known as the Privy Purse, to cover official and private expenditures, as well as the expenses of other members of the Royal Family.
The King’s comprehensive personal tax information for the 2024-25 fiscal year will be released today alongside other reports on royal finances. However, his tax details for 2025-26 will be disclosed next year following the completion of their audit.
Last week, Buckingham Palace announced the release of Charles’ tax payment, emphasizing that the annual Sovereign Grant Report contains detailed information on publicly-funded expenditure and operational data related to Royal finances, subject to government oversight, parliamentary scrutiny, media, and public review.
The Palace further stated its commitment to enhancing transparency and understanding of Royal finances by modernizing and evolving continuously. The aim is to clarify all aspects of Royal finances in a manner that promotes accessibility while placing them in historical and constitutional contexts.
Previously, as Prince of Wales and overseer of the Duchy of Cornwall, King Charles published his tax information, a responsibility now held by Prince William.
