Barry Hoffner, a grieving spouse, shared the tragic moment when he received the devastating news of his wife’s fatal encounter with an elephant. The untimely demise of his wife, Jackie, was a result of a fateful decision that changed their lives forever.
Barry, now 66, and Jackie’s love story began in college, but it was during a trip to India sixteen years after their first meeting that they fell in love at the iconic Taj Mahal. Their adventurous spirits led them to travel the world together, exploring countries like China, Kenya, and South Africa before tying the knot in 1997. The couple settled in various locations, had two sons, Benjamin and Daniel, and were enjoying their empty nest phase in 2017 when tragedy struck.
While their sons pursued their own paths, Jackie, working for a wildlife conservation nonprofit, traveled to Botswana. Barry was en route to meet her in Nairobi when he received the devastating call informing him of Jackie’s tragic accident involving an elephant.
The news shattered Barry, especially learning that Jackie’s fatal encounter occurred as she returned to her tent to retrieve tip money. Despite the overwhelming grief and shock, Barry focused on supporting his sons through the heartbreaking news, seeking guidance and support from a rabbi for Benjamin and personally breaking the news to Daniel in Spain.
Following Jackie’s passing, Barry embarked on a transformative journey of healing and self-discovery through travel. He found solace in exploring different cultures, connecting with people worldwide, and expanding the charitable work he and Jackie had initiated. Through the Caravan to Class foundation, he established the Bourse Jackie Scholarship, empowering young women in West Africa through education and leadership opportunities.
Barry’s healing journey led him to visit numerous countries, except North Korea, and write a book titled “Belonging to the World: A Journey from Grief to Connection in Every Country on Earth.” Despite the profound loss of his beloved wife, Barry remains grateful for the new connections and experiences life has offered him, emphasizing the importance of moving forward while honoring Jackie’s memory.
Currently residing in Sausalito, California, Barry looks forward to completing his global tour by visiting North Korea and continues to cherish the memories of his incredible journey while holding onto hope for the future.
