“Putin Accused in Billionaire Bomb Plot”

Published on

Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing accusations of orchestrating an assassination bid following the detonation of a booby-trapped backpack near a billionaire’s residence. Ukrainian real estate mogul Vadim Ermolaev, 58, is in critical condition after a massive explosion outside his upscale Monaco home, believed to be a deliberate and targeted attack. Ermolaev’s wife, Anna Iermolaieva, suffered severe injuries, including the loss of both feet, and their teenage son was also harmed.

The unprecedented parcel bombing in the billionaire’s secure neighborhood has triggered a multinational manhunt, with the suspected perpetrator reportedly fleeing to neighboring France. While no specific individual has been implicated in the incident, various speculations have arisen regarding potential motives behind the attack.

Ermolaev, originally from Dnipro, Ukraine, amassed his wealth through the Alef Group, a diversified conglomerate involved in commercial real estate, manufacturing, and agriculture. Known for his prominent role in transforming Dnipro’s city center, he and his wife have been active supporters of the Kiddo Charitable Foundation since 2012.

In 2017, Ermolaev relinquished his Ukrainian citizenship and acquired Cypriot nationality. In response to his alleged business ties with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed sanctions on Ermolaev in December 2023, targeting individuals and entities with connections to Russia.

Ermolaev’s close business affiliations in Russia have raised concerns, particularly given the history of targeted attacks against businessmen at odds with the Kremlin. While his past associations suggest a pro-Russia stance, his interactions with the Kremlin and Ukraine’s government have been subject to fluctuations, potentially leading to friction points.

Following his losses in Crimea post-annexation by Putin in 2014 and subsequent asset freezes amid the Russian invasion in 2022, Ermolaev’s attempts to recover assets may have antagonized influential Russian figures aligned with the Kremlin. Speculations regarding Ukraine’s involvement in the attack have surfaced, considering Ermolaev’s strained relationship with Kyiv and his inclusion in Ukraine’s sanctions list.

However, the possibility remains that the attack was orchestrated independently by an individual with ties to organized crime or driven by personal political motives. Ermolaev’s engagement in Crimea’s disputed territories, known for rampant corruption and mafia influence, could have exposed him to threats from local criminal elements.

French and Monaco authorities are actively pursuing an unidentified suspect, investigating the motive behind the attack. Officials have emphasized that the incident, while treated as an attempted murder, is not classified as an act of terrorism.
