“UK’s Longest-Serving Female Prisoner Granted Release”

Published on

The longest-serving female prisoner in the UK is scheduled to be released from incarceration following approval from the Parole Board. Maria Pearson, aged 70, has served close to 39 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Janet Newton, her ex-boyfriend’s new partner, in 1986. Originally sentenced to a minimum of 12 years before parole consideration, concerns over her conduct and public safety led to an extended imprisonment of 27 years.

In a recent decision summary, the Parole Board confirmed Pearson’s release after her tenth review, stating that she no longer poses a significant threat to society. The Board described the decision as finely balanced and outlined strict release conditions, including residence at a specified address, adherence to a curfew monitored by electronic tagging for a year, and avoidance of contact with Janet Newton’s family.

Despite concerns raised by community offender managers regarding Pearson’s potential to cause harm, the Parole Board sanctioned her release on license. Pearson’s nearly four-decade-long incarceration surpassed that of infamous murderer Myra Hindley, who served 36 years before her death in 2002.

The high-profile murder occurred in 1986 when Pearson, consumed by jealousy, fatally attacked 23-year-old Janet Newton, who was engaged to Pearson’s ex-partner. Following the tragic incident, Pearson, from Hartlepool, County Durham, was convicted of murder and ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years before parole eligibility.

Pearson’s progress in prison, including participation in psychotherapy and skills programs, was noted in the Parole Board summary. While acknowledging the risk she poses in distressing situations, the Board assessed her overall risk of serious violent reoffending as low due to her behavior during custody and the circumstances of the original offense.

Support for Pearson’s release was provided by her prison offender manager, lead clinical psychologist, and the operational manager of the enhanced offender management service, all of whom had extensive experience working with her over the years.
