Prince William emphasized the significance of addressing homelessness, stating that it impacts everyone and urging communities to take more action to tackle the issue. Celebrating the third anniversary of his Homewards project, aimed at reducing homelessness to make it rare, brief, and non-recurring in the UK, the Prince stressed the need for increased discussions and targeted efforts in key areas to assist more individuals in securing permanent housing.
During an event at the Tate Modern in London, Prince William revealed that the project had received £7.7 million in funding and an additional £50 million in support from Lloyds bank to propel the initiative towards achieving its 2023 goals. Despite the progress made, he acknowledged the ongoing challenges and the necessity for further measures, particularly in the six trial locations where innovative reforms are underway to demonstrate effective solutions to homelessness.
Reflecting on the cultural attitude towards homelessness, Prince William highlighted the lack of serious attention given to the issue globally and emphasized the importance of raising awareness and taking decisive action. The Homewards initiative, currently being piloted in six locations, has shown promising results in providing stable housing, employment opportunities, and preventive measures for individuals at risk of homelessness.
With investments totaling £1.9 million across the UK and additional funds raised through grants and partnerships, the project aims to support individuals in maintaining their tenancies and prevent future homelessness. Prince William, looking ahead to the project’s future, emphasized the need to expand successful strategies from the trial locations to a national scale to address homelessness effectively.
The Prince also visited one of the Homewards locations in Aberdeen, where 31 individuals now reside in homes created through the program. Additionally, he engaged with artist Myro Doodles’ timeline at the Tate Modern, depicting significant moments related to homelessness, including his past visits with his late mother, Princess Diana, and recent activities with his son, Prince George, underscoring the personal connection and commitment to addressing homelessness issues.
