“Hiker Falls to Death While Posing for Photo”

Published on

A tragic incident occurred as a hiker fell to his death from a cliff after posing for a photo at the summit.

The hiker, identified as Caio Arrabal, aged 44, met his demise at the famed Pedra do Macaco trail in Marica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when he lost his balance while navigating rocks at the mountaintop on a Sunday excursion. A female hiker captured the moment when the man positioned himself precariously in a narrow crevice of the rocky formation.

As the hiker attempted to descend and turned to face a fellow hiker, he tragically slipped and plummeted approximately 492 feet from the cliff’s edge. Emergency services were alerted around 11:40 am, initiating a search operation that lasted about four hours. The rugged terrain and limited access to the area required the rescue teams to employ ropes and air assistance to reach the fallen hiker.

Arrabal was leading a group of visitors along the hiking trail, and it was reported to be his first time on that particular path. Authorities noted the absence of warning signs along the trail.

Describing the challenging recovery operation, rescue instructor Matheus Moura mentioned the arduous task of navigating the steep terrain and dense forest where Arrabal fell. Moura expressed, “We had to navigate through dense vegetation with extremely difficult access to reach him.

“We had to climb, use ropes for ascent, and perform various procedures before reaching the site.” This tragic incident marks the second fatality in the Marica region in the past two weeks.

On June 14, Rosemary Garcia, aged 59, fell from a cliff at a zip-line park in Gruta do Spar (Spar Cave) while part of a group engaging in rappelling activities inside the cave, popular among adventure enthusiasts.

Witnesses reported that Garcia was equipped with safety gear, including a helmet and gloves, as she traversed a route. Tragically, she lost her footing while raising a leg to apply insect repellent and fell from an estimated height of 98 feet. Despite efforts by a guide to prevent the fall, Garcia could not be saved.
