“RAF Red Arrows Upgrade: New Aircraft, £360M Investment”

Published on

The RAF Red Arrows have received new aircraft as part of a lavish £360 million upgrade to replace their aging Hawk planes. This significant investment is aimed at allowing the Red Arrows to retire the Hawk as part of the British Jet Trainer system, a move that is part of the Ministry of Defence’s defense investment plan with the goal of inspiring future generations.

Although the upgrade is welcomed, the Hawk T1 has been a long-standing aircraft for the Red Arrows since 1979, making them the sole remaining operator of these planes. The skilled Red Arrows pilots have garnered praise worldwide, drawing large crowds at each event they participate in.

Former Red Arrows pilot Andy Wyatt expressed relief at the progress in replacing the Hawk aircraft, emphasizing the importance of selecting an aircraft that meets operational needs while also supporting British engineering and maintaining highly skilled jobs in the aerospace industry. He emphasized the significance of the new aircraft carrying on the legacy of the Red Arrows with the iconic red, white, and blue smoke trails representing the best of British design and engineering.

Although the specific model to replace the Hawk has not been disclosed, the RAF is preparing to launch a competition to determine the new aircraft. Potential replacements being considered include the Boeing and Saab T-7A Red Hawk, the Leonardo M-346, and the Korean T-50.

Former Red Arrows pilots are advocating for the replacement jet to be British-made to serve as a symbol of national pride. Additionally, there is a need to address the advanced training of future fast-jet pilots, which is currently conducted using the modern Hawk T2 at Anglesey’s RAF Valley.

The current fleet of 28 Hawk T2 aircraft, introduced in 2012, has faced various engine challenges, limiting the number of operational jets available daily. The defense investment plan also includes a commitment of £1.1 billion to upgrade the RAF’s Typhoon fighters based in Lincolnshire, along with substantial investments in drone technology.
