“Halifax to Merge with Lloyds Bank, Rebranding Underway”

Published on

Halifax, a prominent UK high street presence for 173 years, is undergoing a transformation as it merges with Lloyds Bank. The rebranding will see Halifax branches and customer accounts transition to the Lloyds name. While existing account details like numbers and sort codes will remain unchanged, Halifax customers will need to shift to the Lloyds app for online banking soon.

Communication with customers will be facilitated through various trusted channels such as the Halifax app, online banking, email, and physical mail in the upcoming months. Lloyds Banking Group has outlined a plan to rebrand all 190 Halifax outlets to Lloyds by the end of 2027, with some closures expected as part of the process.

In addition to this rebranding, Lloyds Banking Group has announced a total of 174 branch closures, including 79 new closures, leaving the group with 531 branches across the UK. Despite the changes, the group assures that there will be no job losses resulting from the rebranding.

Originally established in 1853 as the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building Society, the institution has a rich history of serving the community. Over the years, it evolved into the Halifax Building Society before merging with Bank of Scotland to form HBOS in 2001. Following the financial crisis, Lloyds Banking Group intervened to rescue HBOS with government support.

Lloyds emphasized its commitment to Halifax and the wider Yorkshire and Humber region, highlighting recent investments in the local office and workforce. While the decision to rebrand has stirred controversy, especially among long-standing Halifax customers, Lloyds assures that there will be no impact on the Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection or existing account balances.

Customers can continue to manage their accounts across all Halifax and Lloyds branches, regardless of the original brand on their account. Jas Singh, CEO of Consumer Relationships at Lloyds Banking Group, expressed enthusiasm about the transition, assuring Halifax customers of continued service quality and introducing them to new Lloyds offerings.
