Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has cautioned that the Labour party cannot defeat Nigel Farage by playing it safe, emphasizing the need for bold action to challenge Reform UK. Speaking at a lecture hosted by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), Rayner urged her party to address the “rigged” system rather than making minor adjustments.
Rayner highlighted the risk of validating the narrative of right-wing populists by appearing to defend the status quo instead of actively opposing it. She emphasized the importance of not leaving room for anger and resentment to be exploited by those offering toxic solutions.
The Labour heavyweight criticized the tendency to defend the establishment rather than challenge it, pointing out the dangers of aligning with those who exploit the rigged system. She called for courage and boldness in facing challenges, stating that caution would not be enough to overcome adversaries like Farage.
Rayner expressed support for Andy Burnham’s vision to rewire the country, endorsing his proposal for a “No10 North” in Manchester as the nerve center of a revamped Britain. Burnham, expected to assume the role of Prime Minister on July 20, advocates for greater empowerment of mayors and local leaders, emphasizing the need for bottom-up growth rather than top-down directives from Whitehall.
During the NEF’s 40th-anniversary event, Rayner advocated for genuine devolution for regional leaders, rejecting the past approach of seeking permission from Whitehall for local governance decisions. She called for a redistribution of power and resources across the country to drive growth and economic empowerment at all levels.
Rayner concluded by echoing Burnham’s vision of inclusive growth and community-driven policies, emphasizing the importance of serving people, places, and the environment. She reaffirmed the enduring significance of NEF’s founding principles and the ongoing relevance of fighting for a vision that prioritizes the well-being of communities and the planet.
