Mother’s Rare Medical Ordeal: From Plane Collapse to Diagnosis

Published on

A mother shared her experience of losing consciousness on a plane and later being diagnosed with an extremely rare medical condition that only affects about 100 individuals globally.

Nia Jones, who had just returned from a trip to Paris with her daughter, was preparing for a city break to Barcelona when she suddenly started shaking uncontrollably. She passed out and regained consciousness on the plane with a severe headache before being rushed to a hospital following an emergency landing in France.

This alarming incident marked the beginning of a series of health challenges for Nia, leading to a diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type four, a rare form of tumor. The Welsh mother recounted the disorientation she felt upon waking up on the plane and the subsequent confusion as she was taken to the hospital.

Despite undergoing multiple brain scans that showed no abnormalities, Nia continued to experience seizures, eventually being diagnosed with epilepsy and high calcium levels. Further medical assessments revealed her rare condition, which involves mutations in the tumor suppressor gene and an increased risk of developing tumors in endocrine organs like the thyroid, pancreas, and ovaries.

Following an operation to remove three parathyroid glands, Nia’s health stabilized, and she no longer experienced seizures. She regained her driving license and expressed gratitude for the successful treatment, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about such rare conditions to help others receive appropriate care and lead fulfilling lives.
