Annabel Croft, a prominent figure in Wimbledon, revealed a touching gesture she made to keep her late husband, Mel Coleman, close to her after his tragic passing. The former tennis champion lost her husband to colon cancer at the age of 60 in May 2023.
Mel first mentioned experiencing persistent side pains that worsened over time to his wife. Initially dismissing them as indigestion, further tests confirmed the devastating diagnosis of cancer, which had spread to his liver, kidneys, and possibly his brain.
Tragically, Mel succumbed to sepsis following a tumor perforation after a flight to Portugal, just 16 weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. According to NHS data, colorectal cancer ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, with risk increasing with age. Symptoms of this cancer, also known as colon cancer, include changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, among others.
In a podcast interview with Amanda Wakeley OBE, a renowned British fashion designer, Annabel shared intimate details about her late spouse. She revealed that she found solace in sleeping with Mel’s scarf next to her pillow, despite initially disliking the scarf. Mel had a fondness for the garment, which carried his scent and memories.
Annabel reminisced about their relationship, highlighting Mel’s admiration for her clothing choices and how he always made her feel special. She recalled a poignant moment involving a dress she bought shortly before Mel’s passing, which he had praised. Despite the emotional attachment to the dress, Annabel decided to wear it recently, reflecting on the memories shared with her late husband.
Reflecting on the challenges faced after Mel’s death, Annabel spoke out about a distressing encounter with a nurse during his final days. She described feeling “haunted” by the nurse’s callous behavior, especially when delivering the news of Mel’s condition in front of their children. Despite the ordeal, Annabel emphasized Mel’s clear wishes regarding resuscitation and condemned the nurse’s insensitive approach.
Annabel’s heartfelt revelations shed light on her enduring love and respect for her late husband, showcasing the strength and vulnerability that defined their relationship.
