A father passionate about fitness uncovered his kidney cancer during a routine blood test while preparing for a major fitness event. David Ruttledge, residing in Dublin, Ireland, learned of his diagnosis while gearing up for a TRYKA relay earlier this year. After a regular test in October showed abnormal kidney markers, his GP advised a follow-up test, which also indicated elevated levels.
Further investigations were initiated, including an ultrasound to delve deeper into the issue. During this time, David was participating in the fitness challenge with his wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law. Despite the unexpected diagnosis, David has managed to raise significant funds for the Irish Kidney Association and is determined to continue his charitable efforts.
Reflecting on his journey, the 43-year-old expressed, “I had no inkling that something was amiss. Following an ultrasound in early February, it was revealed that I had a mass on my left kidney.” Subsequent scans confirmed renal cancer and a sizable tumor on his left kidney.
Following numerous appointments and tests, David underwent a successful partial nephrectomy on March 3, where surgeons were able to remove the entire tumor while preserving a portion of his kidney. Throughout this challenging period, he credited his wife, sons, family, and friends for their unwavering support, which helped him navigate the toughest moments.
Grateful for early detection and the care he received, David is set to tackle another TRYKA event to celebrate his recovery, raise awareness, and contribute to a cause close to his heart. He emphasized the profound significance of this challenge beyond fitness, aiming to inspire others facing similar battles. Contributions to support his cause are welcome, with nearly €8,000 raised to date. You can make a donation here.
David’s story serves as a beacon of hope, highlighting the importance of early detection, support networks, and resilience in overcoming adversities.
