Andy Burnham has stated that he will not call for an early general election if he becomes Prime Minister and has committed to maintaining the state pensions triple lock. Expected to take over from Keir Starmer as the UK’s leader later this month, Burnham emphasized his dedication to fulfilling Labour’s 2024 election manifesto. Despite Labour’s significant victory just two years ago, some opposition parties have urged for a snap election as the country anticipates a change in leadership.

During an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Burnham responded to a question about calling for an election by reiterating his focus on implementing the 2024 manifesto. When asked about the possibility of abolishing the triple lock due to cost concerns, Burnham reaffirmed Labour’s commitment to the policy, which guarantees that pensions increase in line with either average earnings, inflation, or a minimum of 2.5%.

In response to a call for a public discussion on ensuring a dignified old age for all citizens while the triple lock remains in place, Burnham stressed the importance of honoring the manifesto commitments. As he nears his confirmation as Labour leader on July 17 and subsequent appointment as Prime Minister, Burnham pledged to ensure that the defense investment plan unveiled recently will be adequately funded.

Addressing inquiries about his foreign policy approach, Burnham indicated his full support for Ukraine, echoing the stance taken by Keir Starmer. When questioned about continuing efforts to reset the relationship with Europe and potentially negotiating more ambitious trade agreements, Burnham expressed his intention to build on the existing government’s initiatives in this regard.
