Two individuals have lost their lives following a shooting incident involving three people at a shopping center in the United States after a reported altercation, as confirmed by law enforcement authorities.
The tragic event unfolded at the bustling Fairlane Town Center mall in Dearborn, Michigan, where families were out shopping in preparation for the upcoming July 4 holiday weekend.
Witnesses captured the chaos on video as terrified individuals fled amidst the sound of gunshots, with store shutters hastily being closed for safety.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, with police quickly securing the area surrounding the mall situated near Evergreen Road and Michigan Avenue around 2 pm.
A spokesperson from the Dearborn Police department disclosed that out of the three gunshot victims, two have succumbed to their injuries. One individual passed away on-site, while the other died later in the hospital.
During a press briefing, the officer stated, “Our investigation is in the early stages, but it appears this was not a random act of violence. The altercation seems to have involved two parties familiar with each other at the mall.”
The officer added, “The situation escalated into gunfire, with evidence indicating both parties were armed. Several individuals have been brought in for questioning.”
A previous statement from the Dearborn Police urged the public to avoid the area to allow officers to secure the scene as investigations continued.
Mayor Abdullah Hammoud of Dearborn issued a statement on Facebook advising individuals to steer clear of the Fairlane Mall until law enforcement completes their examination of the incident.
Gabrielle, a store owner within the mall, recounted the moment she heard gunshots, prompting her to secure her store and guide customers to safety, expressing shock at the sudden turn of events.
Eyewitnesses shared their distress, with one woman expressing sorrow for families present at the mall, particularly children who may have been exposed to the traumatic incident.
Another shopper, Weston Fantroy, described being inside the mall purchasing a birthday gift for his daughter when gunshots rang out, causing panic among shoppers and leading him to swiftly exit the premises.
