“England World Cup Match Rescheduled Due to Mexico City Thunderstorm”

England’s upcoming World Cup match has been rescheduled due to an impending thunderstorm in Mexico City. The game, originally set for 1am UK time on Monday, will now kick off at 7pm UK time on Sunday following FIFA’s rare decision. Weather forecasts predicted severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Mexico City during the initial match time.

The Banorte Stadium, also known as the Azteca, is expected to receive nearly 5mm of rain, with a significant storm front moving across the Mexican capital. According to safety regulations, any lightning strike within an eight-mile radius of the stadium triggers a mandatory 30-minute play delay.

Similar severe weather conditions delayed a match in Philadelphia during the tournament between France and Iraq by over two hours. FIFA’s regulations allow organizers to reschedule, relocate, or cancel fixtures at their discretion for safety reasons.

England’s winger, Marcus Rashford, acknowledged the schedule change was not ideal but emphasized the team’s readiness to face any challenges. The last-minute adjustment came shortly after Keir Starmer announced extended pub hours in England and Wales to accommodate fans watching England’s overnight World Cup games without the need for special licenses.

With the possibility of the match potentially extending past 3am UK time, the Prime Minister’s relaxation of alcohol licensing laws allowed pubs and bars to stay open until 5am if necessary. This change aims to ensure fans have the opportunity to support England during the late-night fixture.
