A journalist who harassed former Conservative chancellor George Osborne and his wife Thea Rogers has avoided imprisonment. Lydia Suffield, aged 29, sent false emails to their acquaintances, reported them to social services, and even sent gifts to their children. Mr. Osborne described the harassment, involving numerous emails to their contacts, as severely damaging.

The freelance writer also made false referrals about the couple to the NSPCC, leading to investigations for drug abuse and child neglect. Mr. Osborne expressed the profound impact of the stalking, emphasizing its debilitating nature.

Suffield utilized multiple anonymous email accounts to spread hurtful allegations, details of which were not disclosed in court to prevent further harm to the victims. Mr. Osborne labeled the stalking as an attempt to ruin their lives, while Ms. Rogers described it as malicious and disruptive.

The stalking began with social media contact in 2020 and escalated in 2022, involving false accusations and disturbing actions towards the couple and their associates. The prosecutor highlighted Suffield’s obsession with Mr. Osborne, as evidenced by personal information and inappropriate content found in her possessions.

Suffield faced charges related to stalking, to which she pleaded guilty to lesser offenses. Despite the seriousness of her actions, she received a suspended custodial sentence. The judge warned her of potential imprisonment if she violates the terms within two years.

The judge condemned Suffield’s actions as persistent, planned, and distressing, leading to significant distress over an extended period. Additionally, she was ordered to undergo rehabilitation activities, pay prosecution costs, and adhere to a restraining order prohibiting contact with specified individuals, including Mr. Osborne and Ms. Rogers.
