“Welsh Ex-Jeweler Gets Prison for Neighbor’s Killing”

Published on

A former jeweller residing in northern Wales has been sentenced to prison for killing his neighbor following a dispute over noise issues. James Hughes, aged 67, physically attacked Harold Turner, aged 68, with a walking stick and pinned him down during an altercation at their housing complex in St Asaph on December 25, 2025.

Despite denying the charges of murder and manslaughter, Hughes was convicted of murder by a jury in the past month. Crucial evidence presented during the trial included audio recordings from a device worn by Hughes, which he claimed he carried for self-protection against potential attacks from Mr. Turner.

At Caernarfon Crown Court, Hughes received a life sentence with a minimum term of 13 years, with credit for 185 days spent in custody awaiting trial deducted from his sentence. Reports indicate that Hughes remained in his cell during the sentencing process.

The court proceedings revealed that both Mr. Turner and Hughes resided as neighbors at the Old Palace retirement flats. Constant tension existed between them, with Mr. Turner frequently complaining about disturbances attributed to Hughes, such as loud noises and disruptions during nighttime hours.

During sentencing, Judge Matthew Nicklin described Mr. Turner as agitated and upset before the fatal incident, leaving a voicemail for Hughes on Christmas morning expressing strong resentment. The judge highlighted additional threatening behavior by Mr. Turner on that day, including interactions with North Wales Police.

Judge Nicklin emphasized that the physical altercation initiated by Mr. Turner escalated into a tragic outcome, where Hughes disregarded pleas to cease his actions. The judge characterized Hughes’ response as hostile and uncaring towards Mr. Turner.

After the incident, Hughes returned to his apartment, made a phone call to his nephew, and admitted the possibility of causing harm to someone. Medical reports confirmed that Mr. Turner died due to asphyxiation and suffered facial and head injuries.

In defense of Hughes, his lawyer Gordon Cole KC cited Hughes’ history of being a victim of crimes in South Africa and poor physical health. The lawyer also mentioned Hughes’ immediate calls to the police for assistance on Christmas morning.

Detective Chief Inspector Eleri Thomas condemned the incident as a senseless act resulting from a long-standing dispute between two elderly neighbors. Thomas highlighted Hughes’ aggressive actions leading to the confrontation and subsequent tragic consequences, providing closure to Mr. Turner’s family through legal proceedings.
