“Calls for New, Inspiring National Anthem at World Cup”

Published on

There are numerous criticisms being directed at this nation currently from various sources.

Whether it’s the MAGA supporters portraying it as a lawless, crime-infested place or Europeans ridiculing it for post-Brexit remorse, this country has become an easy target.

One would expect our reputation to be thriving as humanity celebrates its greatest game, a sport that this country introduced to the world. However, that is not the case. Despite the Three Lions’ presence in the tournament, the world is subjected to what is possibly the least inspiring national anthem ever sung before each game.

This year, with an expanded World Cup, the anthem sounds even more uninspiring as it ranks at the bottom among 48 anthems according to The New York Times’ Athletic website.

The anthem not only falls short compared to powerful anthems like those of France, Brazil, and the Netherlands, but also pales in comparison to anthems like Colombia’s spirited call to action and Curacao’s lively saxophone melody. Closer to home, anthems like Flower of Scotland, Land of Our Fathers in Wales, and Ireland’s The Soldiers’ Song evoke strong emotions, making the national anthem seem lackluster.

With lyrics that are bland and lack meaning, it’s understandable why a significant portion of the population, who either do not support monarchy or believe in God, find it difficult to resonate with the anthem.

A new anthem is necessary, especially since Scotland and Wales already have their own distinctive anthems. Songs like “A New England” by Billy Bragg or “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen could serve as more fitting alternatives.

Transitioning to songs like “God Save the Queen” by the Sex Pistols or “Eton Rifles” by The Jam could also be considered, reflecting a modern perspective on the country’s heritage.

For a more classical choice, William Blake’s hymn “Jerusalem” could provide a powerful critique on capitalist tendencies.

Considering all factors, a well-known, beloved singalong that encapsulates the national traits of cynicism, pessimism, and stoicism, such as Eric Idle’s “Always Look On the Bright Side Of Life,” could be a suitable replacement.

This choice would resonate especially during World Cups, acknowledging the rollercoaster of emotions that English fans experience throughout the tournament.
