An environmental activist and influencer, Manuel Alejandro Moreno Serna, also known as Alex Serna, was tragically discovered deceased in Mexico after expressing concerns about death threats he had received instructing him to cease his activities. Serna, 39, went missing on June 20, the same day he uploaded a video alleging misconduct by a fruit company. His body was found two days later in a blue drum, showing signs of torture, in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero.

The victim’s identity was confirmed by his family days after the discovery, and later verified by the Human Rights Commission of the State of Guerrero (CDHEG), prompting a call for a thorough investigation. Serna, recognized for his advocacy against environmental harm, territorial disputes, and potential corruption in the Costa Grande region, had recently exposed unauthorized water extraction by a foreign mango company in his state.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the crime, and no arrests have been made in connection with Serna’s death. Prior to his demise, he had received menacing messages via social media, including threats such as “cut the crap” and “we’ve got you in our sights, you better back off.” The community, particularly activists and journalists, has rallied in support, planning demonstrations to demand justice and raise awareness about disappearances and silencing.

Expressing urgency, a friend of the deceased journalist emphasized the growing risk faced by communicators in Guerrero, urging the attention of relevant authorities, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, to address the situation promptly. This incident highlights the broader issue of independent communicators being targeted for promoting truth and transparency in the region.
