“UK Heatwave Returns: Temperatures to Soar Up to 34C”

Published on

Temperatures are expected to rise up to 34C as the heatwave makes a comeback in certain areas of the UK next week. The Met Office has predicted that temperatures will climb to 29C on Sunday and then reach the low 30s early next week, peaking at 34C on Thursday and Friday in the South East. This upcoming spell of hot weather is anticipated to last for several days but is projected to be less intense and humid compared to the previous heatwave experienced last month.

Health authorities are concerned about the potential risks posed by the rising temperatures to vulnerable individuals, prompting the issuance of yellow heat health alerts by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). These alerts cover regions such as the East Midlands, east, south-east, and south-west of England, including London, as well as the West Midlands, effective from midday on Saturday until 8pm on July 11.

Due to the scorching heat, Southern Water has imposed a hosepipe ban starting from 12.01 am on July 10 in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The water company emphasized the need for restrictions to safeguard local rivers, including the River Test and Itchen, which are major water sources, and to ensure a continuous water supply. However, exceptions are made for customers with medical requirements who are registered for priority services.

The UKHSA warned of potential minor disruptions in health and social care services within the alert areas, including a possible surge in healthcare usage by vulnerable groups and an increased risk of water-related incidents like cold water shock and drowning.

Meteorologist Becky Mitchell from the Met Office mentioned that a heatwave is approaching southern England and Wales, with temperatures already elevated in the South East. While the northern regions may experience cloudier conditions with intermittent rain, the southern areas are expected to see temperatures rising towards the low 30s at the beginning of the week, reaching a peak of 34C in the South East on Thursday or Friday. This heatwave, although lasting around a week, is projected to be less intense than the previous one in terms of heat and humidity.
