Flames have broken out in close proximity to the main airport in Majorca, accompanied by loud explosions and billowing smoke above the runway.
Palma de Mallorca Airport has been placed on “pre-alert” due to the nearby fire, potentially causing disruptions to flights to and from the popular holiday destination favored by British tourists.
Witnesses have observed thick black smoke rising over the airport, visible from miles away, prompting residents in the smoke’s path to be advised to remain indoors for safety.
Authorities, including the National Police and the Palma Fire Brigade, are on the scene, actively working to contain the flames. Two firefighters have received treatment for smoke inhalation as the fire has extended to the Mallorca Daily Bulletin reported.
The fire is believed to have originated within the Mercapalma main food storage facility before spreading to parked vehicles, igniting them in the process. The parked cars are proving challenging to extinguish due to the substantial fuel present at the location, according to reports.
Flightradar data indicates that 257 flights are currently delayed at Palma de Mallorca Airport. However, no official information regarding the fire has been shared on the airport’s website or social media platforms.
A spokesperson from Aena, the company managing Palma de Mallorca Airport, informed the Mirror that current operations remain unaffected by the incident.
