Labour Veteran Sir George Howarth Remembered for Decades of Public Service

Published on

Keir Starmer has honored the memory of Sir George Howarth’s extensive public service following the passing of the 77-year-old Labour veteran.

Sir George, a former government official, dedicated nearly forty years to serving as a Member of Parliament after his initial election to represent the Merseyside area of Knowsley North back in 1986. His tenure in the Commons concluded at the most recent general election in 2024, where he represented Knowsley.

In response to the news, the Prime Minister expressed, “George devoted his life to public service, demonstrating exceptional dedication to his party, country, and the people of Knowsley. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this challenging period.”

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle lamented the recent loss in the House of Commons, referring to Sir George’s passing as a sorrowful event. He reminisced about their shared history, including campaigning together during the 1986 by-election.

Deputy Labour leader Lucy Powell also shared her sentiments, describing Sir George as a deeply political figure, rooted in his community and family, who offered valuable insights during his extensive tenure in Parliament.

Anneliese Midgley, the current Labour MP for Knowsley, expressed deep sorrow over Sir George’s passing, offering her thoughts and prayers to his loved ones and former colleagues.

Reflecting on their time together, schools minister Catherine McKinnell fondly remembered Sir George as a warm and humorous colleague, extending her sympathies to his family and friends.

Throughout his parliamentary career, Sir George was involved in various capacities, including chairing debates in Westminster Hall and overseeing committees. He also served as a minister in the Home Office and the Northern Ireland Office during Tony Blair’s early years as Prime Minister.

In recognition of his service, Sir George was knighted in the 2019 Birthday Honours for his contributions to Parliament and politics.

The Knowsley constituency remained under Labour representation in the last general election, with Ms. Midgley securing a substantial majority of 18,319 votes.
