A plea for a boycott has been made by an organization advocating for marine animal rights due to the confinement of dolphins at a high-end hotel.
Recently, aerial footage has surfaced capturing six dolphins swimming in what activists have labeled as a cramped concrete enclosure at a luxurious hotel in Mexico. This revelation has sparked calls for a global boycott of the establishment.
The Hyatt Ziva Cancún resort, located in Cancún, has leased out their former swimming pool to Delphinus, a dolphin experience company, since 2015. Video footage recorded in May 2026 by TideBreakers, a marine animal rights group, depicts the dolphins swimming in repetitive loops or remaining still near an entry point.
TideBreakers has alleged that the dolphins are regularly engaged with hotel guests throughout the day, leaving minimal opportunities for them to exhibit their natural social behaviors. Consequently, the organization is urging a worldwide boycott of Hyatt hotels until the resort terminates its contract with Delphinus.
During a visit to the resort in May, Marketa Schusterova, co-founder of TideBreakers, noted that the dolphins were enduring substandard conditions. She expressed concerns over the dolphins being confined in shallow tanks without shelter, enduring continuous exposure to loud music during the day and disruptive laser shows at night. In addition, she observed signs of poor health, including thinness and physical injuries, indicating distress and a lack of normal social interactions typical in their natural habitat.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson from Hyatt Ziva Cancún acknowledged the raised concerns regarding the dolphins on the premises. The spokesperson emphasized that while Delphinus is responsible for managing the dolphin habitat and program at the resort, the establishment is committed to upholding high standards across all its services and experiences.
Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted that Delphinus is a certified organization accredited by both Mexican authorities and international bodies, ensuring the well-being of the dolphins under their care through the expertise of trained animal care and veterinary professionals.
