A warning from charities highlights that a freeze on housing benefits is driving individuals into a cycle of debt, presenting them with challenging circumstances. Recent research reveals a decline in the availability of affordable properties for benefit recipients in the UK, dropping from 2.7% to 1.9% over the past year, as reported by Zoopla and organizations like Crisis and Citizens Advice.
This situation is leading struggling households towards debt, poverty, and potential homelessness, with a surge in families already residing in temporary shelters. The prolonged freeze on Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates, determining the maximum rental support individuals can receive, is a major concern. Advocates are pressing the government to lift the freeze on housing benefits to prevent more households from falling into poverty and homelessness.
Andy Burnham, with plans for a significant council house construction initiative, has criticized the ongoing freeze. He emphasized that the country is caught in a housing dilemma where attempts to manage rental costs through benefits are failing, resulting in homelessness and financial strains on councils.
Crisis’s Chief Executive, Matt Downie, highlighted the dire circumstances faced by low-income individuals across Britain due to the housing benefit freeze. He stressed the urgent need for a welfare system supporting those with minimal incomes to prevent a continuous cycle of debt and homelessness. Similarly, Dame Clare Moriarty, from Citizens Advice, emphasized the struggles of families pushed to the brink by frozen housing benefits and soaring rents, underscoring the necessity to address the housing crisis promptly.
In response, a Government spokesperson outlined measures taken to combat rising rents and housing shortages, such as the commitment to build 1.5 million homes and substantial investments in social and affordable housing. They also mentioned initiatives like the Crisis and Resilience Fund, raises in the National Living Wage, significant investments in homelessness services, and the allocation of a record sum towards affordable housing. The government’s efforts aim to alleviate poverty and improve living standards for the population.
