A young girl who was the focus of an extensive search effort in South Carolina is now believed to be deceased following the arrest of her parents in connection with her passing.

Javeayah Harris, aged four, was reported missing, prompting a large-scale search involving helicopters, drones, police dogs, and numerous officers from various agencies.

Aiken County authorities have stated that they suspect the child had passed away at least a month before she was reported missing. The search for Javeayah has transitioned from a rescue operation to a homicide inquiry, although her body has not been located yet.

The father, Johmarea Harris, 23, faces charges of homicide by child abuse, while the mother, Michilae Herring, 22, has been charged with homicide by child abuse and making a false police report. Both individuals are currently in custody as law enforcement continues to search for their daughter’s remains.

Investigators revealed that evidence gathered during the probe led them to believe that Javeayah was deceased before the emergency call reporting her disappearance on June 30. Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer Jr. expressed regret, stating, “Sadly, it was already too late to save her the moment the 911 call came in.”

The search for the child’s body outside Aiken County is ongoing. Initially, the search and rescue operation spanned over 3,000 acres, utilizing helicopters, drones, K-9 units, and a large number of law enforcement personnel.

Court documents indicate that both parents allegedly confessed to the child’s death, even though her body remains undiscovered. Authorities have hinted at the possibility of additional charges pending the progress of the investigation.

Local residents have expressed sorrow by creating a memorial of flowers, teddy bears, and balloons outside the family’s residence in tribute to the young girl. Following her disappearance, hundreds of volunteers from the community participated in the search efforts, with one resident stating, “She captured our hearts.”

Authorities previously described Javeayah as a cheerful and expressive child who adored Minnie Mouse and enjoyed chasing chickens.

Sheriff Sawyer extended gratitude to the agencies and volunteers involved in the search and offered condolences to Javeayah’s extended family. Despite the somber turn of events, he assured the public that the search for the little girl will persist until she is found.

He emphasized, “Our quest for Javeayah continues. It remains imperative that we bring her home.”
