A mother who passed away following a car accident that caused the vehicle to plunge into a deep valley in Spain will be laid to rest on Friday.
Amy McCullagh, a mother of three from County Westmeath, Ireland, was on vacation when the tragic crash occurred. She was accompanied by three others in the vehicle, including her husband, who is currently in critical condition at a hospital.
Amy, along with Michaela Newcombe and her brother-in-law, Mark McCullagh, lost their lives in the accident. Amy’s husband, Ian McCullagh, who is Mark’s brother, survived with serious injuries and remains in critical condition in a Spanish hospital. Ian and Amy had tied the knot in southern Spain in August 2024.
The group was in Malaga for a holiday when their car veered off the A7 motorway and fell 100 feet into a ravine in the early hours of June 28.
According to Spanish authorities, the collision took place around 2:30 am local time and involved a taxi and a car. One of the vehicles crashed, leading to it plunging down an embankment near the road.
Amy’s funeral service is scheduled to be held at the Church of the Nativity in Ballynacargy on Friday, as reported by the Irish Mirror. She will be laid to rest at Sonna Cemetery following the service.
She is survived by her two daughters and a son. The family has requested that any donations be directed to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
Her obituary stated: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter Amy, who tragically lost her life in a road accident in Spain, alongside Mark’s girlfriend Michaela.
“Amy will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her husband Ian, daughters Ruby and Kaylee, and son Curtis.”
Tributes to Michaela Newcombe, who worked as the head receptionist at Havan Sun Mullingar beauty school, described her as a compassionate, beautiful individual who radiated positivity and kindness to everyone she encountered.
Local Sinn Féin councillor Julie McCourt expressed the town’s shock over the tragedy, extending heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the wider community, emphasizing the profound loss experienced by all.
