Monty Don’s garden in Herefordshire, known as Longmeadow, serves as the setting for BBC Gardeners’ World. The renowned horticulturist acquired the two-acre plot in 1991 when it was just an empty field.
Despite limited funds, Monty spent the following spring and summer maintaining the land by mowing the grass and clearing debris. Throughout this time, he planned, dreamt, and sketched his vision for the garden. Today, Longmeadow stands as a beautifully designed sanctuary that supports wildlife, boasting seasonal displays, lush borders, and thoughtfully designed areas.
While pictures of his residence remain private, the garden has been featured for many years. In an interview with English Home, Monty revealed that he lives near Leominster in Herefordshire, close to the Welsh border. He explained that the location’s distance from London’s commuter belt made it more affordable for him.
Describing his residence as a Tudor oak-beamed hall house with 10 workrooms and studios, Monty has divided the garden into four main sections: the Cottage Garden, Jewel Garden, Paradise Garden, and Vegetable Garden. Documenting the garden’s transformation on his blog, Monty expressed that the planting began earnestly in spring ’93 and has continued ever since, resulting in significant and impressive changes.
Viewers of Gardeners’ World regularly catch glimpses of Monty’s garden, featuring the diverse plants and vegetables he cultivates. Leominster, a market town in northern Herefordshire, serves as an excellent base for exploring both England and Wales, offering visitors historic sites, picturesque streets, and stunning gardens.
The town’s history dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era, with the establishment of a notable abbey in 660 AD.
