“German Palliative Care Doctor Sentenced for 15 Murders”

Published on

A German palliative care physician has received a life sentence for the murder of 15 individuals by administering a deadly mix of sedatives and setting fire to some of their residences in an attempt to conceal his actions. The 41-year-old, known only as Johannes M due to privacy regulations, was found guilty by a Berlin court of killing 12 women and three men during home visits spanning from September 2021 to July 2024. The victims’ ages ranged from 25 to 94. It was revealed in court that he lit the victims’ apartments on fire to hide the murders on at least five occasions.

Judge Sylvia Busch, presiding over the case, suggested that the 15 confirmed murders might only scratch the surface, as prosecutors are currently looking into the deaths of 76 other individuals. Johannes M was labeled a “serial killer” by the judge in what she described as a perplexing and exceptional case. The court decided that the seriousness of the crimes precludes any review after 15 years to determine potential suspension of the remaining sentence. Additionally, Johannes M will face preventive detention following his incarceration and has been permanently banned from practicing medicine.

Prosecutors characterized the doctor as having a “desire to kill” with no motive other than the act of killing itself. The mother of the youngest victim, a 25-year-old woman who lost her life in 2021, broke down in tears in court, stating, “She never expressed a desire to end her life.”

The court determined that Johannes M deliberately administered a combination of anesthetic and muscle relaxant that resulted in respiratory muscle paralysis, leading to respiratory failure and death within minutes. On a fateful morning in July 2024, he murdered a 75-year-old man in Kreuzberg and a 76-year-old woman in Neukolln. His attempt to set fire to the second crime scene failed as the fire did not ignite.

In a confession on Monday, Johannes M admitted to “killing people” and expressed deep remorse, acknowledging, “I am appalled by my actions.” He reportedly realized the extent of the suffering he had caused only recently.

Concerns regarding Johannes M’s conduct first arose from care services, prompting a police inquiry that led to his arrest in August 2024. Initially focusing on four cases, investigators witnessed a surge in suspicious deaths. If the additional deaths under scrutiny are confirmed as murders and Johannes M is convicted, he could go down in history as one of Germany’s most prolific serial killers.
