Hotel in Rhodes, Greece Cracks Down on Sunbed Reservations

Published on

Holidaymakers vying for poolside loungers may have found themselves in a tough spot as a hotel employee was caught on camera removing towels and bags from reserved sunbeds while guests were having breakfast. The video, recorded by 19-year-old Lucie Hewes from the UK, captures a staff member conducting morning checks at a hotel in Rhodes, Greece, clearing unoccupied loungers even when personal items were left on them.

Lucie mentioned that the hotel strictly prohibits guests from saving sunbeds, yet many visitors disregarded the rule by placing towels, hats, and bags before heading off to breakfast or back to their rooms. She noted, “The pool attendant comes around at approximately 8 am every morning and eliminates towels and belongings from unoccupied beds.”

As per Lucie, some guests returned perplexed to find their belongings missing, while others were displeased to see other holidaymakers already occupying what they considered their sunbeds. She remarked, “It was amusing and enjoyable to witness and fair to see, as the no sunbed reservation policy is just.”

An incident occurred where a woman confronted a pool staff member, expressing her discontent that her belongings had been relocated, leaving her with no place to sit. Lucie mentioned that the staff calmly reiterated the hotel’s policy, explaining that sunbeds could not be reserved to ensure all guests had an equal opportunity to secure one.

“Despite retrieving all her belongings, she remained dissatisfied,” Lucie stated. The video has sparked discussions on the annual sunbed conflicts, a common occurrence during British holidays abroad.

Lucie’s video garnered 538,000 views, 23,000 likes, and 294 comments. One user commended, “Well done wish all hotels did this.”

Another individual commented, “All hotels should adopt this practice.” Someone else suggested, “If you disagree, skip breakfast and stay on your loungers.”

Jay mentioned, “Every hotel should follow suit! Well done.” Another user added, “Not all heroes wear capes.”

This incident followed closely on the heels of another UK holidaymaker making headlines for a more controversial response to the issue. Tom Caunce admitted to discreetly sprinkling itching powder on towels left on reserved loungers during a vacation in Majorca, expressing frustration with guests claiming prime poolside spots early in the morning and then disappearing for hours.
