An individual has passed away from measles, as confirmed by health authorities, amidst an uptick in cases throughout the United Kingdom.
The health officials stated that an adult with an underlying immunological condition succumbed to the disease. This development follows the tragic deaths of two children in England due to measles in June.
From the beginning of the year until July 6, there have been 883 confirmed cases of measles reported in England, according to data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
All regions in England have documented cases, with London accounting for over half (52%), the West Midlands for 17%, and the North West for 10%, as reported by UKHSA. The majority of cases involved children aged 10 and under, as indicated by the government agency.
In response, NHS leaders initiated a campaign targeting parents of children aged two to 11 who missed the MMR vaccine, which guards against measles, mumps, and rubella. The updated vaccine, MMR/V, now also provides protection against chicken pox.
Efforts are underway to reach out to approximately a million families with children who missed one or both doses of the vaccine. Data for the initial quarter of the year revealed that 84.1% of five-year-olds had received both doses of the MMR vaccine.
General practitioners will reach out to parents of children under six years old, while those with children aged six to 11 will be contacted via the NHS app, text, email, or letter.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization announced that the UK no longer achieved measles elimination status. This declaration in January followed a stagnation in vaccination rates and a surge in measles cases.
Measles is transmitted through respiratory or fluid droplets exhaled, coughed, or sneezed by infected individuals. Apart from fatalities, in rare instances, it can lead to vision impairment, hearing loss, and neurological issues. Infected individuals are contagious from the onset of symptoms until four days after the rash emerges.
Concerns escalated earlier this year due to low vaccination rates, leading to unvaccinated children possibly being sent home from school during an outbreak.
The World Health Organization highlighted that measles, previously eliminated in the UK between 2021-2023, resurfaced in 2024 as vaccine coverage dipped below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity.
According to NHS guidance, measles typically begins with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash several days later. Some individuals may also develop small mouth lesions.
Initially, white spots may appear inside the cheeks and on the lips a few days after the onset of cold-like symptoms.
Subsequently, a rash emerges on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body several days after the initial symptoms.
