Melanie Chisholm, known as Sporty Spice, shared insights into the essence of Girl Power and her preferred Spice Girls bandmate while commemorating the 30th anniversary of their debut single. This week marks a significant milestone for the quintet, including Melanie Brown, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, and Geri Horner, as they reflect on the release of their iconic track “Wannabe” three decades ago.
During an exclusive conversation with the Mirror at the Silver Clef Awards in London’s Royal Albert Hall, Mel C revealed her closest relationship within the group and reminisced about their rapid ascent to stardom. When quizzed about her favorite Spice Girl and who she would choose outside the band, the 52-year-old humorously responded, “That’s a tough one! I prefer rotating favorites. Among the girls, I share a special bond with Emma. I adore my Baby Spice. I saw her yesterday… Emma yesterday, Victoria today because she styled me.”
Mel C, mingling with luminaries like Lily Allen, John Bishop, and Jessie J at the event, also clinched the Global Impact award for her contributions to the music industry and beyond. Reflecting on the band’s journey, she expressed, “This year has been phenomenal. The timing feels perfect, especially with the Wannabe anniversary. 30 years – a remarkable tribute to the Spice Girls’ legacy. Without the band, my solo career and international success wouldn’t have been possible. I am immensely proud and truly enjoying the ride.”
Recalling the genesis of “Wannabe” in a studio in East London with producers Matt Rowe and Biff Stannard, Mel C emphasized the track’s encapsulation of the Spice Girls’ essence, making it an ideal debut single that propelled them to global fame. Despite being released in 1996, “Wannabe” swiftly climbed the charts in 37 countries, followed by hits like “Say You’ll Be There,” “2 Become 1,” “Who Do You Think You Are,” and “Spice Up Your Life,” solidifying the concept of “girl power” in pop culture.
Addressing the enduring relevance of feminist ideals, Mel C remarked, “Equality remains a distant goal… Hopefully, we will eventually bridge that gap. The societal structure poses significant challenges. Women are remarkable, and the younger generation, like my daughter’s cohort, exhibits remarkable outspokenness. Women lead the way, inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s all about empowering women and embracing diversity.”
