Melissa Gilbert, known for her role as Laura Ingalls in the classic TV series Little House on the Prairie, recently shared a significant update about her family. The 62-year-old actress, who gained fame through the beloved show that originally aired in the seventies and is now streamable on Netflix, disclosed that she had made a startling discovery – she has three brothers from her birth family whom she recently connected with after being adopted at birth.
Expressing her eternal gratitude for her adoption, Gilbert mentioned that she had previously established contact with some of her biological father’s relatives many years ago, although those relationships had their challenges.
In a recent Instagram post, she revealed, “For those who don’t know, I was adopted at birth. For which I will be eternally grateful. Decades ago, I found my birth father’s family, including my three older half-siblings. Those relationships were a bit fraught, not very close and still full of secrets. Not what I’d hoped but ultimately an important part of my story and one for which I will always be grateful to them for.”
Just three weeks ago, a cousin on her birth mother’s side led Gilbert to the unexpected discovery of her three brothers. Calling it a ‘dream come true,’ she expressed her joy at finding out about her siblings, particularly highlighting her excitement about having three big brothers, Matt and Laird, from her birth mother’s side.
One of her newfound brothers, Matt, aged 66, expressed his astonishment at discovering that he had a famous actress as a sister, stating that he looks forward to exploring this new chapter in their lives together. He shared, “After 66 years, I learned that my brothers Laird Steven E. Paine and Mark A. Olson Sr. and I have a biological sister! Unfortunately Mark Is no longer here to share in the excitement, but his son Mark Olson is. Some of you already know this story, but many of you don’t. It’s been an incredible few weeks of discovering family history, sharing stories, asking a million questions, and getting to know someone I never knew existed.”
Matt emphasized that Melissa’s celebrity status was not the most significant aspect for him; rather, the paramount importance was finally reuniting with his long-lost sister after decades apart.
