“Paddleboarding Duo Fined for Lack of River Licence”

Published on

Two men were stopped by authorities while paddleboarding on the River Medway in Kent. Ross Mathieson and his friend were approached by police and Environment Agency officers, who discovered they did not have a required licence. The men were informed that they could face a fine of up to £1,000 for not having the proper documentation.

In a recorded exchange, Ross’s friend questioned the possibility of a fine, to which the officer responded negatively. Ross then expressed surprise at the situation and was advised by the officer that a river licence was necessary. The officers recommended joining Paddle UK, an organization that includes a waterways licence in its membership fees.

The annual cost of adult membership with Paddle UK is £65, specifically needed for paddleboarding on inland rivers and canals. Ross likened his paddleboard to a “bicycle on water” and expressed reluctance to pay for the licence now that he was aware of the requirement.

Following the encounter, Ross mentioned that the officers took photos of them and stated his lack of surprise at the incident, citing the numerous regulations in England. He shared his thoughts on the situation, expressing a sense of both unexpectedness and inevitability in dealing with such rules.

Online, users on TikTok reacted with disbelief to the incident, questioning the necessity of licensing for paddleboards. The Kent Police clarified that patrols were being conducted for water safety purposes and to address antisocial behavior along the River Medway. The Environment Agency emphasized the importance of waterway licences to maintain and manage inland waterways for the safety and enjoyment of boaters.
