Tragedy struck a family from Chignautla in Puebla State, Mexico, as they were caught in a cave by sudden heavy rain, resulting in one fatality and three individuals currently unaccounted for.

The Peña family, along with a guide, found themselves trapped in the Chichicazapan cave in Cuetzalan due to rising waters caused by intense rainfall. Despite efforts to seek refuge inside the cave, the group was carried deeper by strong currents, preventing their escape.

Among those trapped, three individuals, including Araceli Antonio Peña, Agustín Julián (the boyfriend of one of the daughters), and the guide, managed to navigate the challenging conditions and reach safety on the first day of the ordeal.

Sadly, the body of Gerardo Julián de los Santos, aged 31 and brother of Agustín, was recovered on Wednesday after drowning in the cave.

The search continues for Ismael Peña, Araceli’s husband, and their daughters, Karime Peña, 24, and Jazmín Lizbeth Peña, 21, who remain missing since the incident.

Araceli, the wife and mother of the missing individuals, recalled the tragic events, mentioning that they entered the cave at the guide’s advice to avoid getting wet, unaware of the impending flood.

The guide, employed by Destino de Aventura, received medical treatment and was later discharged after the incident.

Despite ongoing search efforts involving specialized teams, including divers and speleologists, rescue operations have been hindered by adverse weather conditions and safety concerns for the rescue teams.

Cuetzalan, known for its heavy rainfall, poses risks of sudden flooding in underground caves, emphasizing the need for caution during such weather events.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of conducting search operations only under safe weather conditions. Reports indicate that the tourists were equipped with basic safety gear but lacked advanced equipment for such situations.

The family’s trip, meant to celebrate their youngest daughter’s 21st birthday and fulfill her wish to explore caves, ended in a devastating turn of events.
