Hundreds of mourners gathered to honor a young policewoman who tragically lost her life in a traffic accident while responding to a separate crash.
PC Jess Turnbull, aged 19, was fatally struck by a car while assisting at the scene of a two-car collision. The tragic incident occurred when another vehicle hit their patrol car, causing PC Turnbull to sustain fatal injuries.
During the funeral procession on Friday, PC Turnbull’s casket was escorted to Newcastle Cathedral with a solemn display that included horses, bagpipers, and motorcyclists. Uniformed police officers from various forces nationwide stood in respect outside the cathedral as the procession made its way through specially closed city streets.
The procession, led by seven bagpipers and a drummer followed by mounted officers, solemnly carried PC Turnbull’s coffin, draped in a union flag, into the church. The poignant moment was accompanied by the emotional melody of Amazing Grace played by the pipers under the bright sunshine.
As the officer’s casket was brought into the church, her police hat was reverently placed on top, and dignitaries, including Northumbria Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine, paid their respects. PC Turnbull’s grieving parents, accompanied by extended family members and numerous officers, followed the coffin inside.
A coroner previously detailed the circumstances surrounding PC Turnbull’s tragic death, revealing that she and a colleague had been attending a collision on the A189 near Cramlington, Northumberland, before the fatal incident occurred. The coroner explained that PC Turnbull was implementing a road closure when she was struck by a passing motorist, leading to her untimely demise.
Northumbria Police reported that a 73-year-old Mercedes driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection to the incident and has been released on bail. PC Turnbull had recently commenced her service with the police force in September.
