“Traveling to Europe? Get a Free UK GHIC Now!”

Published on

Planning a trip to Europe this summer? Before you embark on your journey, financial expert Money Saving Expert recommends that every traveler should have a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for potential cost savings. The GHIC allows access to state healthcare in many European countries in case of emergencies, but it is essential to note that it does not replace the need for travel insurance.

During the National Money Assembly at St Charles 6th Form College in London, Martin Lewis emphasized the importance of obtaining a GHIC before heading to Europe. He highlighted that the card is entirely free and cautioned against paying third-party websites for the application process.

Lewis advised travelers, “Always get your GHIC card if you’re traveling to Europe. This card entitles you to treatment in a state-run hospital in a European Union country at the same cost as locals, meaning if it’s free for them, it’s free for you.” He stressed the convenience of being able to visit a GP abroad with the GHIC if locals receive free healthcare services.

While the GHIC covers necessary healthcare during temporary stays in the EU and select other countries, it does not include private medical treatments, mountain rescue, repatriation to the UK, or costs related to lost or stolen belongings. Therefore, Martin Lewis suggests that relying solely on the GHIC is not sufficient. He recommends securing travel insurance promptly after booking a trip to ensure comprehensive protection before and during the vacation.

Lewis encourages travelers to follow his rule of purchasing travel insurance “ASAB” – as soon as they book. This early action safeguards against cancellations due to unforeseen events like illness or injury prior to departure. Applications for a GHIC are available for free on the official NHS website, and most individuals can apply online. Any charges incurred through third-party websites for the GHIC application are unnecessary, as the card itself is provided at no cost.
