A scorching heatwave is expected to cover the UK this weekend, with temperatures reaching record highs. Southern and western England could see mercury levels soar to 36C today, following a peak of 35C on Friday. This year has already set a record with six days hitting 35C or above.

Even Yorkshire, as far north as it is, is preparing for a high of 33C today. The entire country is experiencing temperatures well above the usual seasonal average, as shown by recent weather maps.

Emergency services are on high alert due to the extreme heat, warning of increased wildfire risks. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) cautioned against using disposable barbecues in the dry conditions to prevent potential fires.

The Metropolitan Police is also concerned about a surge in calls, especially with England playing against Norway in the FIFA World Cup quarter-final tonight. The match at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, is scheduled to start at 10pm BST.

As extreme weather conditions affect various parts of the world, the US National Weather Service predicts temperatures as high as 43C, with thunderstorms and lightning also expected. FIFA regulations mandate a suspension of play if lightning is within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, possibly delaying or rescheduling the game.

The Met Police is urging the public to refrain from making non-emergency calls during the hot weather and the World Cup. Deputy Metropolitan Police commissioner Matt Jukes emphasized the importance of only contacting emergency services for critical situations.

The police force stressed the need to reserve 999 calls for immediate life-threatening emergencies, violence incidents, or crimes in progress. Officers are prepared to respond to essential calls while coping with the challenging weather conditions.
