An elderly man from California was severely injured after being thrown by a massive bison at Yellowstone National Park. Despite following safety guidelines, the 80-year-old grandfather suffered a fractured hip when the 907kg beast charged at him in the Bridge Bay Campground. Witnesses stated that the man and his grandson had noticed the bison from a safe distance but were still attacked. The incident occurred during bison rutting season, known for increased aggression in the animals.
Prior to encountering the grandfather, the bison had already shown signs of agitation by rushing at a group of youngsters. As the man and his grandson tried to retreat, a passing truck seemed to provoke the bison, causing it to target the pair. The bison charged at the grandfather, tossing him several feet into the air with its horn, causing serious injuries. The animal stood over the fallen man, prompting a brave intervention from onlookers to scare it off.
Emergency responders provided immediate assistance to the injured man before transporting him to the hospital. His condition remains serious, with ongoing medical attention required. The National Park Service is conducting an investigation into the incident to ensure visitor safety in the park.
