A senior citizen from the UK, Malcolm Timbrell, is devastated by the loss of his wife, friends, and neighbors in the wildfires that struck the Spanish village of Bedar in Almeria province. The tragic incident occurred when the flames engulfed the area, separating Timbrell from his wife Annette Kilgore and their group.

Timbrell and Kilgore had relocated to Bedar after being featured on the Channel 4 show “A Place in the Sun,” where they discovered the property. Initially planning to escape by car, Timbrell changed his mind to rescue their two cats. Upon returning, he found that the group had abandoned their vehicles and were attempting to flee on foot, a decision he strongly advised against due to the rapidly spreading wildfire.

Despite Timbrell’s efforts, his wife and the others proceeded in front of the rapidly moving firewall, with tragic consequences. Timbrell and one of the cats managed to navigate between abandoned vehicles to evade the flames, narrowly escaping the devastation.

Tragically, a 93-year-old British woman was among the 13 confirmed fatalities in the catastrophic wildfires that swept through southern Spain. The Andalusian government reported that she had suffered severe burns to 20% of her body and succumbed to her injuries. Four more victims, believed to be British, were found in a burnt-out car with right-hand side steering.

In a glimmer of hope, two British hikers were discovered alive but with severe burns. Rescued by a Civil Guard team, the couple, who sustained burns to 40% of their bodies, are currently in critical condition in the hospital. Authorities believe all the victims were foreign tourists who attempted to flee on foot after abandoning their vehicles in the face of the fast-moving fire.

Spanish emergency services head Antonio Sanz confirmed that post-mortem examinations and DNA sampling were underway to identify the victims. The tragic event occurred amid Spain’s recurring heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 40C, leading to over 1,000 excess deaths linked to extreme heat in June alone.

The Foreign Office expressed condolences for those affected by the devastating wildfires in Spain, noting their support for impacted British nationals and their families. The situation remains under close watch by both British and Spanish authorities.
