A tragic incident at a bar in Bangkok has resulted in the death toll climbing to 30 individuals. The fire that occurred at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar in northern Bangkok left over 70 people injured, with 24 still in critical condition. This devastating event marks the deadliest fire in the city over the past 17 years.
The bar, known as a brewery or beer hall, purportedly had the capacity to accommodate up to 600 customers, though the exact number present during the fire remains unclear. Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the fire and whether the establishment was compliant with safety regulations.
Following the tragedy, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt has initiated a comprehensive evaluation of similar venues to assess potential risks. He has also pledged to enhance the enforcement of safety regulations to elevate standards across the city.
Mourners have paid their respects at the site of the fire, leaving floral tributes and heartfelt messages in various languages. Meanwhile, Amorn Pimanmas, the president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, highlighted potential fire hazards at the bar, emphasizing issues like limited ventilation and the use of non-flame-retardant materials for decoration.
Pimanmas also pointed out discrepancies in the bar’s licensing, indicating it was registered as a restaurant rather than an entertainment venue, which may have impacted the level of fire safety requirements. He stressed the importance of stricter enforcement of fire safety laws to prevent such tragedies in the future.
