Film icon Sam Neill has passed away after battling pneumonia, as confirmed by a close friend and former colleague. The Jurassic Park actor’s death occurred on Monday, shortly after being declared free of cancer following a struggle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
Reportedly, the 78-year-old succumbed to pneumonia, likely due to the toll taken on his body by intensive cancer treatments. While the official cause of death has not been disclosed, Sam had shared in April his successful fight against blood cancer after being diagnosed four years ago.
Pneumonia, an infection that inflames lung tissue, can lead to breathing difficulties and, in severe instances, pose a life-threatening risk by obstructing the airway. According to Ryan Bridge of the New Zealand Herald, Sam’s co-star Rima Te Wiata confirmed the actor’s battle with this severe lung ailment.
Laura Tingle, Sam’s former partner, revealed that his compromised immune system left him susceptible to infections, ultimately resulting in his passing. The actor’s family announced his death on social media, expressing their sorrow but also emphasizing his cancer-free status until the end.
In 2022, Sam was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, during his promotion of Jurassic World Dominion, after experiencing swollen glands.
