“Train Driver’s Cause of Death Revealed in Bedford Crash”

Published on

The train driver’s cause of death in the recent rail crash near Bedford has been disclosed. Shaun Burton, aged 60, passed away due to “traumatic injuries to the brainstem and chest, pending further investigation,” according to an official report from HM Coroner’s Office. The inquest convened this morning at Bedfordshire and Luton Coroner’s Court in Ampthill under the direction of coroner Emma Whitting.

During the brief hearing, it was decided to adjourn proceedings for additional inquiries by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police. The coroner’s office indicated that the collision occurred on June 19, 2026, south of Bedford rail station between two trains, resulting in 162 injuries, with 102 individuals needing hospital treatment.

Investigations by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch revealed that the train Mr. Burton was driving passed a red signal shortly before the collision. The collision involved Mr. Burton’s East Midlands Railway (EMR) train from Corby to London St Pancras and another train from Nottingham heading to London St Pancras. The impact occurred when the Corby train struck the stationary Nottingham service while traveling at 49mph.

Data analysis from the wreckage indicated that the brakes were applied as Mr. Burton’s train was traveling at 77mph, with the speed decreasing to 49mph upon impact. The train was equipped with an automatic warning system (AWS) to alert the driver of signals, with the investigation revealing that the stationary train stopped unexpectedly due to a fault in its AWS equipment, causing the signal to turn red.

Approaching trains are expected to halt at red signals to avoid collisions. Mr. Burton’s cause of death, as recorded, was “traumatic injuries to the brainstem and chest, pending further investigations.” The coroner extended condolences to Mr. Burton’s family, friends, and colleagues. His dedication and professionalism in his role as a railway professional were acknowledged by EMR’s managing director and Aslef’s general secretary also paid tribute to Mr. Burton post the tragic incident.
