A father recently shared a harrowing experience where he and his son narrowly escaped death after getting stuck in beach mud but managed to survive by utilizing skills he learned as a zoologist in rainforests.

James Downs, 47, and his 11-year-old son Oliver, who are avid anglers, found themselves trapped in soft mud up to their chests while digging for bait as the tide started rising. Despite attempts to call for help, bystanders on the shore were unaware of the severity of the situation.

Recalling the terrifying moment, James expressed his fear of not making it out alive and emphasized the importance of teaching children how to swim to prevent such incidents. This plea coincides with The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign aimed at preventing water-related tragedies.

Drawing on his zoologist training, James used a bait pump as a probe to navigate the treacherous mud and safely make their way back to shore at St Mary’s Bay in Kent. He credited his experience in the Australian rainforest for helping him maneuver through the challenging terrain.

James highlighted the physical and mental strain of the rescue, likening each step to lifting weights as he struggled to keep his son afloat and move forward. The duo barely escaped the rising tide, with James feeling the cold water at his neck upon reaching the beach.
