“Actor Andy Serkis Defends Casting Choices in ‘The Hunt for Gollum'”

Published on

Actor Andy Serkis has come to the defense of the casting choices for the upcoming film “The Hunt for Gollum,” a spin-off from the popular “Lord of the Rings” series, following criticism regarding the lack of diversity in the cast. Serkis, who portrayed Gollum in the original films, is now directing and starring in this new production, which centers on Strider’s quest for the creature during the events of “Fellowship of the Ring.” The casting of primarily white actors sparked controversy, prompting Serkis to address concerns, stating that the film will address diversity issues “where relevant” without simply conforming to checkboxes, noting that the Shire setting predominantly appears “very white.”

Responding to the backlash during an interview with the BBC, Serkis acknowledged the criticism and highlighted the insular nature of the Shire in the story, influenced by Norse mythology as created by JRR Tolkien. While recognizing past criticisms of the original films’ casting, Serkis emphasized that the new film would be mindful of these concerns without solely focusing on politically correct casting decisions.

The announced cast for the film includes returning actors from the original series such as Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Serkis reprising his role as Gollum. New additions to the franchise feature Anya Taylor-Joy as elf Seren, Kate Winslet as Marigol, and Jamie Dornan as Strider, who is revealed to be Aragorn, played by Viggo Mortensen in the original movies. Additional actors like Lee Pace, known for his role in “The Hobbit,” will also join the production.

The film, slated for release on December 17, 2027, will offer a unique perspective from Gollum’s point of view. In addition to this spin-off, another film titled “Shadow of the Past” is in the works, written by former talk show host Stephen Colbert.

Andy Serkis, an advocate for equality in the film industry, has previously spoken out about his experiences regarding diversity. In an interview with Radio Times, he reflected on his role in “Black Panther,” where he was one of the few white actors on set, providing him with a fresh outlook on minority representation in cinema.
