Police in South Wales have provided an update following an incident where a man, allegedly armed with a crossbow, was shot by officers after displaying threatening behavior. The individual was discovered with the weapon when law enforcement responded to a call at a residence on St Edward Street late in the evening on Friday, July 10. Authorities confirmed that a 21-year-old suspect was shot by officers using a police-issued firearm and subsequently received medical attention before being transported to a hospital. As of the latest report, the man is said to be in stable condition.
Following the shooting, a referral has been initiated with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The man, a resident of Newport, has been taken into custody on suspicion of affray, threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon. While under police guard in the hospital, investigations are ongoing.
Deputy chief constable Nicholas McLain sought to reassure the public, stating that the incident was isolated with no ongoing threat to the wider community. Emphasizing the seriousness with which firearm-related incidents are treated, McLain praised the professionalism and high standards adhered to by firearms officers, highlighting that the use of police firearms is a measure of last resort in response to significant threats.
