“UK to Restrict Sale of Loud Fireworks, Protecting Pets & Well-being”

Published on

A new law change will prohibit excessively loud fireworks except in professional displays, responding to concerns raised by various groups over the distress caused by loud explosions. Advocates for animals, including charities and emergency services, have long pushed for this measure to protect pets and livestock from the anxiety and harm caused by loud fireworks.

Minister for Consumer Protection, Kate Dearden, highlighted the impact of nuisance fireworks on people’s well-being, emphasizing the disruption to sleep, families, and pets. She shared a personal experience of her dog being terrified by late-night fireworks and emphasized the negative effects of inappropriate firework use on individuals and their pets.

While expressing a personal fondness for firework displays, Ms. Dearden stressed the need to curb their excessive and distressing use. The government intends to restrict the sale of loud fireworks to professional displays only, targeting irresponsible use to tackle antisocial behavior and safeguard pets across the UK.

A forthcoming consultation will propose limiting the use of the loudest fireworks to licensed displays, ensuring that public displays can continue while addressing concerns about noise and distress caused by fireworks.

Organizations such as the Dogs Trust and Redwings Horse Sanctuary have welcomed the government’s initiative, citing the significant distress and risks posed by fireworks to animals. They urge public participation in the consultation to advocate for tighter regulations that prioritize animal well-being.

Additionally, concerns have been raised about the impact of fireworks on veterans, with Combat Stress highlighting the triggering effect of loud noises and flashes on individuals with traumatic combat experiences. The government’s proposed restrictions aim to mitigate distress while ensuring organized displays can continue safely.

The Department for Business and Trade views these measures as common-sense solutions to address public worries about noise and antisocial behavior, emphasizing the need to balance public enjoyment with community well-being.
