US President Donald Trump has commended Iran for its “goodwill gesture” following the release of an American citizen who had been detained for over 18 months. Trump’s acknowledgment of this gesture comes amidst escalating tensions between the two nations.

Tensions between the US and Iran have been intermittent since February 28, marked by joint airstrikes conducted by the US and Israel on key Iranian locations. In response, Iran retaliated by targeting sites in the region and blocking the vital Strait of Hormuz passage.

In a post on the Truth Social platform on July 15, Trump stated that Iran had allowed the wrongfully detained American citizen, held since December 2024 during the administration of Joe Biden, to depart the country safely. Trump expressed gratitude for Iran’s act of goodwill.

Despite this positive development, the US carried out strikes against Iran on the same day. The US Central Command reported targeting Iranian command centers, air defense facilities, and missile capabilities, including coastal surveillance installations to reduce threats to commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military action, authorized by the Commander in Chief, aimed to hold Iran accountable for its actions. A month earlier, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by both nations to end hostilities within 60 days, but efforts to achieve lasting peace and restore international shipping in the region have been unsuccessful.

Recently, Iran announced its withdrawal from the MoU due to alleged US violations, asserting full sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and taking control of Oman’s share of the waterway. Trump declared an end to the ceasefire during a NATO summit, expressing disdain for further dealings with Iran.

The situation remains volatile as both nations continue to assert their positions, with diplomatic efforts having failed to bring about a lasting resolution to the conflict.
