“Rising Trend of ‘Strangulation Sex’ Sparks Concern and Calls for Awareness”

Published on

A concerning sexual practice known as “strangulation sex” has been gaining popularity across the country, leading to serious and sometimes fatal outcomes. This trend has permeated mainstream culture, appearing in music, social media, and now on television screens through a soap opera storyline.

Referred to as “choking,” this practice has become normalized, with references found in popular songs like Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on me” and online in memes such as “choke me daddy.” However, the gravity of this behavior has not been fully addressed until now, as the show “Coronation Street” embarks on a challenging narrative that sheds light on the life-altering consequences of non-fatal strangulation.

Research indicates that a significant portion of young adults, aged 16-34, have either experienced or engaged in strangulation during sexual encounters. Despite the prevalence of this behavior, many individuals may not fully grasp the potential dangers associated with it. Defined by Dr. Hannah Bows from Durham University, sexual strangulation involves the restriction of blood or air flow to the neck, either through physical means or with the use of tools.

Contrary to common misconceptions perpetuated by pornography and online culture, choking poses serious health risks. In a groundbreaking episode of “Coronation Street,” a character suffers a stroke due to neck artery damage resulting from a sexual strangulation incident. This storyline aims to initiate crucial conversations about sexual practices and raise awareness about the risks involved.

Legal expert Professor Clare Glynn emphasizes the inherent dangers of choking, stating that there is no safe way to engage in such behavior, even with consent. The repercussions can range from severe physical harm to potential fatality, highlighting the urgent need to address this issue.

As awareness grows, educational initiatives are being introduced to inform young individuals about the legal implications and health risks associated with sexual strangulation. The government has announced plans to incorporate this topic into sexual education lessons for teenagers, aiming to prevent harm and promote safe practices in intimate relationships.

For individuals seeking support or information on stroke symptoms, emergency measures, or assistance for non-consensual sexual experiences, resources such as the Stroke Association and Rape Crisis England & Wales are available to provide guidance and support. Initiatives like these play a vital role in safeguarding individuals and promoting healthy relationships in society.
