“Europe Braces for 50C Heatwave, British Travelers Warned”

Published on

A scorching heatwave with temperatures reaching 50C could impact Europe, prompting a warning to British travelers to prepare for hazardous conditions this summer. Holidaymakers bound for the Mediterranean have been cautioned about potential soaring temperatures, surpassing 50C, as experts suggest that the ongoing record-breaking heat in southern Europe might just be the start. Recent days have witnessed parts of Spain enduring 44C temperatures, fueling wildfires in Spain and France and leading to the evacuation of thousands.

Professor Bill McGuire, Emeritus Professor of Geophysical & Climate Hazards at UCL, has indicated that even hotter weather could be on the horizon. He mentioned the possibility of temperatures exceeding 50C later this summer or next year, particularly with the anticipated impact of the unprecedented El Niño in the Pacific.

Travelers heading to the Mediterranean are advised to be prepared for prolonged indoor stays due to the extreme heat, as Professor McGuire emphasized the need to spend substantial time in air-conditioned environments. The highest recorded air temperature in Europe stands at 48.8C in Sicily in 2021, surpassing the previous 48C record set in Elefsina and Athens in 1977.

Professor Hanna Cloke, Regius Professor of Meteorology and Climate Science at the University of Reading, warned of temperatures in the high 40s in parts of Spain and Portugal, stressing the risks of extreme heat, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable. She urged caution, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged sun exposure in temperatures exceeding 40C.

Professor McGuire highlighted the role of climate change in driving these extreme heat events, attributing the escalating temperatures in Europe to the continuous increase in CO2 emissions. He emphasized the urgent need to address carbon emissions to mitigate the rising temperatures and prolonged heatwaves, stating that the Mediterranean region is likely to face even hotter summers in the future if significant action is not taken to combat climate change.
