A teen girl fell victim to a serial catfisher who stole her identity and used it to deceive men into believing they were in a relationship with the 19-year-old. Sasha-Jay Davies, hailing from Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, had her photos snatched from her online profiles by Elha Mai Weston, a fellow teenager in the same Welsh town. Weston impersonated Sasha-Jay on various platforms like Tinder, Hinge, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and SoundCloud for almost four years, accumulating a significant following of 100,000 between 2022 and 2026.
Despite Sasha-Jay’s attempts to involve the authorities, the catfishing persisted until she enlisted legal help to track down the perpetrator. Weston utilized Sasha-Jay’s identity to engage in romantic conversations with strangers online, even after multiple reports were submitted to the platforms hosting the falsified accounts. The situation escalated to the point where men were misled into believing they were in a genuine relationship with Sasha-Jay, causing her immense distress and anxiety, particularly when approached by individuals who thought they knew her due to interactions with Weston’s fake persona.
After an extensive investigation by Sasha’s lawyers, Weston was revealed as the mastermind behind the deception and was taken to the High Court in London. She admitted her wrongdoing and issued a formal apology, leading to a £10,000 compensation settlement to Sasha-Jay for the distress caused. Weston’s actions were described in court as a “sustained campaign of online impersonation”, with fake accounts under aliases like “Sophie” and “Sophie Kadare” using Sasha-Jay’s images without consent. Following police scrutiny, Weston acknowledged her misconduct and agreed to the compensation, expressing regret for the distress inflicted on Sasha-Jay.
The legal settlement, known as a Tomlin Order, includes a provision barring Weston from repeating her actions in the future. Sasha’s lawyer emphasized that catfishing is a serious form of online abuse and highlighted the importance of holding perpetrators accountable through civil proceedings. Moving forward, the legal team plans to involve law enforcement to further investigate the matter, now that Weston’s identity has been uncovered in court.
